Hi everybody!
First thank you very much for paying attention to my home page!
My name is Ans Straates and I live in Maarssen in Holland near Utrecht. I am a mother of two and professionally I have been working as a nurse until I got ill recently. I am very sorry not to work anymore.
I thought I had diabetes during the past years since my blood sugar level was very high. The doctors thus gave me insulin. Apparently the insulin did not solve the problem and after an examination the doctors found out that I am resistant to it (!) - even the insulin my own body produces. The examination also showed that my body actually IS able to produce enough insulin on its own! As a matter of fact my body produces more insulin than the average person! Currently, I can only keep my blood sugar level down by being on a constant diet (protein pudding!) - it is not fun but it keeps my blood sugar level low enough to stay out of hospital.
The doctors here cannot give me an answer to why my body reacts like this. To the knowledge of my doctor, I am the only person in Holland with these symptoms. However, people have told me that there must be other people in the world who experienced this or have some knowledge regarding this. Therefore this homepage!!
My idea was that there might be others who had the same experiences as I or have any knowledge about this. This is directed both towards other patients with similar symptoms and doctors, nurses or other people doing research within this area. I can be reached on my e-mail address.
